How to choose sunglasses for your face

How to choose sunglasses for your face

Most frame advice starts with a face-shape chart. Charts help, but they miss the two things that decide whether a frame works: scale and line. Here is how we think about it.

Start with width, not shape

A frame should be about as wide as your face at the temples, with no more than a finger's width spare on either side. Too narrow and your face looks wider; too wide and the frame slides. Every TIEFE product page lists lens, bridge and temple sizes in millimetres. If you own a pair you like, check the inside of its temple for the same three numbers and compare.

Then play against your lines

Soft, round faces usually get sharper with a flat brow and squared lenses, like KANTE or BLOCK. Angular faces and strong jaws tend to settle with a curve, such as the panto FADEN or the round KREIS. Long faces suit deeper lenses that cover more of the cheek. Short faces suit a slimmer lens and a higher bridge.

Weight changes the read

Thick acetate adds presence and looks deliberate. Thin titanium almost disappears and lets your brows do the talking. Neither is more correct, so decide how much you want the frame to say before you choose the shape.

Check the bridge

The bridge carries the frame. If the glasses lift onto your cheeks when you smile, the bridge is too wide or the lenses too deep. Metal frames with adjustable nose pads leave more room to fine-tune than a fixed acetate bridge.

When in doubt

Take a front-on photo wearing the pair you reach for most, then compare it with our product photos side by side. The TIEFE frame that keeps the same proportions is usually the safest place to start.
